Install
- 1Open the downloaded file,
SSHive-2.0.8-arm64.dmg. - 2Drag SSHive to the Applications folder.
- 3Open SSHive from the Applications folder. The first time, macOS points out that the app came from the internet: click “Open”.
What the direct version adds
The local terminal (your Mac’s own shell, in a tab), ssh:// links, the automatic configuration of Claude Code, Cursor and Claude Desktop, and the keys of Strongbox, 1Password, Secretive, Bitwarden, gpg-agent or yubikey-agent without SSHive Agent. Compare the two versions.
Already have SSHive from the App Store?
Both versions carry the same name and do not sit side by side in Applications. They do not share their data either: before you replace the App Store version, open Settings > Backup and set up the automatic backup, which is free and encrypted with a passphrase you choose.
In the direct version, activate your key first, then “Restore a backup”, which the app also offers at first launch. Without an activated key, the restore stays within the free version’s limits.
Your App Store purchase stays attached to your Apple account: you can go back to the App Store version the same way.
Updates
SSHive checks for a new version itself, on dl.sshive.app, downloads it and installs it when you quit, or right away with “Restart”. The first check happens 1 minute after launch, then every 6 hours. You can switch it off in Settings > General, “Check for updates automatically”. What it sends: see the privacy policy.
