Automatic backup

2.0.8

An encrypted copy of everything you created in SSHive, in the folder of your choice. Free.

By Lucas Russo, developer of SSHive · Updated

What is backed up

Your profiles, shared accounts, passwords, managed SSH keys (including those no profile uses) and their passphrases, OTP codes, settings, quick commands and SSH fingerprints. It is the content of an encrypted export, written on its own.

Set it up

  1. Open Settings > Backup, then click Set up.
  2. Choose a passphrase of at least 8 characters, and type it twice.
  3. Click Choose folder and turn on, then pick a folder. iCloud Drive is suggested: a folder on iCloud Drive or on another disk stays available if this Mac does not.

When SSHive backs up

One minute after a change, at least once a day, and when you quit if a change was still waiting. Back up now writes one right away, and Open folder shows them in the Finder.

The files

Each backup is a file named SSHive-sauvegarde-YYYY-MM-DD-HHMMSS.sshive. SSHive keeps the 10 most recent and the most recent of each of the last 30 days, and touches no other file in the folder.

Restore

  1. Open Settings > Backup, then Choose a backup, under Restore a backup. On first launch, the welcome screen offers it too.
  2. Pick the .sshive file, type its passphrase, then Restore.

The file's profiles, accounts and keys are added to those already here; nothing is removed. Its settings replace the ones of this installation, and if it carries an OTP vault different from yours, SSHive asks which one to keep.

Restoring stays within the limits of the installed version: a backup made with SSHive Pro is restored in full once Pro is activated.

Change the folder, the passphrase, or turn it off

  • Change folder: the next backups go elsewhere, the ones already written stay where they are.
  • Change passphrase: the backups already written keep the old one.
  • Turn off: SSHive forgets the folder and the passphrase; the files already written stay.

If backup fails

Folder moved, disk unplugged or full: Settings > Backup says so, and offers to choose the folder again or to try again.

Moving between the App Store and the direct version

The file does not care which of the two wrote it: back up on one side, install the other from the download page, and restore. Your profiles, keys, accounts and settings arrive whole. Only Pro does not travel, because it is not in the backup: an App Store purchase is restored with Restore purchases, and a license key is activated again in Settings > License.
